Desquamation is the enzymatic process of dissolving the desmosomes, the protein connections between corneocytes and the eventual shedding of these cells. Enzymes need water for their functioning. In the absence of water, the cells do not desquamate normally and the result is accumulation of cells on the skin surface, thickened, dry, rough and scaly skin.
